Subject Essence

We have a strong belief that our PSHE curriculum should develop a deep rooted understanding of the Ash Green child; in body, heart and mind. At Ash Green our PSHE is delivered through a ‘Healthy Minds, Happy Me’ programme alongside RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) and a bespoke long term PSHE progression map; which follows the statutory guidance for PSHE in Primary Schools.

At Ash Green Primary Academy, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an integral part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos supporting every child to become their ‘best me’. British Values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain. Alongside this, our curriculum demonstrates appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to fulfil the duties of the statutory Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) guidance outlined by the Department for Education.

Curriculum Content and Progression

Intent of our PSHE and RSE Curriculum;

The intent of our PSHE and RSE curriculum is to deliver a bespoke curriculum which is accessible to all of our children and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. At Ash Green Primary Academy, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that can be part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a culturally diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

We believe strongly that it is the class teacher who is best placed to tailor the provision to meet the needs of their own individual children.

Implementation;

At Ash Green we deliver a bespoke, carefully crafted and progressive scheme of work which is in line with the National Curriculum. This covers the following areas;

1 All About Me

2 Friendships

3 Resilience and Coping

4 Belonging

5 Being the Best Me I Can Be

6 My Wider World

The progression of knowledge and skills also includes opportunities to link British Value and SMSC. Our PSHE curriculum starts in EYFS and follows the children through to Year 6 and details of this coverage can be found on our long term progression document below;

PSHE Curriculum Statement

RSE Curriculum Statement

All learning activities used in our curriculum allow opportunities for discussion and debate. All children are given the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and attitude. We feel passionately about the impact of children debating or discussing key issues – acknowledging that it is often from these conversations that they acquire the confidence and ability to talk about their own feelings. Ultimately, we believe that the PSHE curriculum is a key driver in creating a well-rounded Ash Green pupil; in body, heart and mind. We want our children to leave Ash Green Primary Academy as positive and happy citizens, prepared for life in a society which is ever changing and evolving.
