Phonics

Subject leader bio 

Phonics is led by Miss Alice Worthington (Deputy Head Teacher) and Miss Charlotte Bishop (Senior Assistant Head Teacher). It has been jointly led for a number of years, during which time we have achieved some highly successful outcomes for our children. Between us, we have a breadth of experience of early reading within both the Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Because of this, we are able to draw on a range of supporting knowledge as to how to secure effective phonics instruction. We believe that effective phonics instruction is the cornerstone of early literacy and we are dedicated to ensuring every child develops a foundation and love for reading.

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. They are taught how to:
– recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes;
– identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make – such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’
– blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word.
Children can then use this knowledge to ‘de-code’ new words that they hear or see.
This is the first important step in learning to read.
