Subject Essence

“Our belief is that every child can achieve highly in Maths.”

Essence

Mathematics equips pupils with the uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is important in everyday life. It is integral to all aspects of life, and with this in mind, we endeavour to ensure that children develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them.

Our aim is to develop good, consistent teaching of mathematics, which is lively, engaging and involves a carefully planned blend of approaches that direct children’s learning. Where the pitch and pace of the work is sensitive to the rate at which children learn while ensuring expectations are kept high and progress is made by all children. We aim for all teachers to talk positively and enthusiastically about mathematics and respond to the challenge of developing their practice. The learning environment will promote an appreciation of mathematics and the importance of mathematics must be recognised beyond the classroom so that the children understand the role of mathematics in everyday life. We aim for a school culture in which children show confidence and enthuse about their achievements in mathematics and their thirst for learning is reflected in their enjoyment and excitement of mathematics.

We want to inspire our children to use mathematics to make rich connections and develop the necessary skills to make them “deep thinkers”, acquiring maths skills that can be recalled quickly and applied across the areas of maths and use their knowledge in other areas of the curriculum. We are passionate about developing our children, so they feel confident to take risks and become resilient when faced with a challenge.

Curriculum Content and Progression

Our Maths curriculum:

  • has number at its heart – a large proportion of time is spent reinforcing number to build competency,
  • ensures teachers stay in the required key stage and support the ideal of depth before breadth,
  • provides plenty of opportunities to build reasoning and problem solving elements into the curriculum.

At Ash Green Primary Academy, we use a mastery approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics. The intention is to provide all children with full access to the curriculum, enabling them to achieve confidence and competence – ‘mastery’ – in mathematics. Mastery is not just being able to memorise key facts and answer test questions quickly, it involves knowing “why” as well as knowing “that” and knowing “how”. To use knowledge and apply it to new and unfamiliar situations.

We follow the White Rose Maths Schemes of Learning where for each year group there is an overview that details the teaching time required for each block of learning across the year. Termly overviews show the objectives for each block. The objectives in each block are broken down into a series of carefully planned small steps which should be taught in order because they are designed to gradually develop children’s understanding. This approach is explained in the Mathematics policy.
