Curriculum Content and Progression
At Ash Green, we believe that teaching and learning in Mathematics should inspire and engage children’s curiosity about the numerical and logical aspects of the world around them. Our mastery approach supports children in developing deep, conceptual understanding and analytical minds. Through rich discussions and collaborative learning, children learn to question and explore mathematical concepts thoroughly. Building on their existing knowledge, children are given the opportunity to have their understanding challenged, to refine their thinking, and ultimately enhance their mathematical comprehension. A carefully planned range of practical activities set in meaningful contexts helps to develop a variety of problem-solving skills and encourages children to take risks and learn from their mistakes, fostering them into independent and confident learners.
Curriculum Objectives
Ash Green Primary Academy Mathematics Policy Year group progression:
- EYFS: Focus on developing a deep understanding of numbers to 10, using concrete manipulatives and visual representations to explore basic addition and subtraction.
- Year 1: Introduction to simple addition and subtraction using number lines and practical resources. Emphasis on counting in multiples of 2, 5, and 10.
- Year 2: Building on addition and subtraction skills with more complex problems. Introduction to multiplication and division using arrays and repeated addition.
- Year 3: Developing written methods for addition and subtraction. Introduction to formal written methods for multiplication and division, including the use of times tables.
- Year 4: Consolidating written methods for all four operations. Emphasis on the efficient use of formal written methods and mental strategies.
- Year 5: Extending written methods to include larger numbers and more complex calculations. Introduction to long multiplication and division.
- Year 6: Mastery of all written methods, including long multiplication and division. Preparation for secondary school mathematics with a focus on problem-solving and reasoning.
Subject Leader
Hello! My name is Anna Mitchell, and I am the Maths Subject Leader at Ash Green Primary Academy.
As the Maths Leader, my primary focus is to ensure that every child has a rich and engaging learning experience in mathematics. I work closely with our teaching team and the North Mids Maths Hub to develop a curriculum that not only meets educational standards but is also exciting and relevant for our children. Our collaboration with the Mids Maths Hub creates a dynamic network that brings together schools and maths communities with the shared goal of enhancing teaching and learning. This partnership allows us to access research-based resources and innovative teaching practices to guide learning in our school.
I am also here to support both children and parents, offering guidance and resources to reinforce mathematical concepts at home. Together, we can foster a positive and confident attitude towards mathematics, nurturing a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom

The essence of mathematics at Ash Green – Foster a love for numbers and mathematical thinking in children. Develop confident, quick, and accurate mental arithmetic skills.
What should we see children doing?
- Practising rapid recall of number facts and times tables.
- Using mental strategies to solve a variety of arithmetic problems.
- Engaging in mental maths games and activities to reinforce learning.
- Explaining their thought processes and strategies to peers and teachers.
- Building on previous knowledge to tackle increasingly complex problems.
- Demonstrating fluency and flexibility in their use of numbers and operations.

How can you help your child at home?:

Children in Years 1-6 are expected to complete online homework on Prodigy Maths.
For children in Years 2-4, and those in Years 5-6 who are not yet secure in their times tables, Teachers will set target times tables to practice at home using TTRockstars, an online programme offering daily times tables practice. Additionally, advice is offered on our website of free home learning platforms such as Hit the Button games which support with developing mental fluency.
Times Table Rock Stars
We have invested in “Times Tables Rock Stars”, an online programme to support in learning Times Tables. Your child has been given a username and password and has been allocated times tables by their class teacher (at their level). You can challenge yourself, your friend, your Teacher or another class!!
Your teacher is able to monitor progress, both as a class and individually and your child will also able to see their own improvements and progress.

Prodigy Maths
Your child can play games on Prodigy Maths that link to curriculum objectives.

Hit the Button is an interactive maths game with quick fire questions on number bonds, times tables, doubling and halving, multiples, division facts and square numbers. The games which are against the clock challenge and develop a child’s mental maths skills.

Calculation policy:
By adhering to a calculation policy, we ensure consistency and progression in teaching mathematical operations. This directly impacts children’s understanding, fluency, and overall mathematical achievement. At Ash Green, we follow the White Rose mastery calculation policy to ensure consistency and progression in teaching formal written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division across all year groups. The policy helps in tracking progress, addressing gaps in learning, and ensuring that all children develop strong calculation skills, thereby enhancing their confidence and competence in mathematics. We use concrete manipulatives, visual representations, and practical resources to support the development of calculation skills. Regular assessments are conducted to monitor progress and identify areas for intervention and support.
