Essence of History

At Ash Green Primary Academy, our history curriculum—guided by the Kapow Primary scheme—aims to inspire curiosity and deepen children’s understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world. Through engaging and well-sequenced lessons, we empower pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, and develop informed perspectives and sound judgement.

We want our children to:

• Develop a secure understanding of the chronology of British history and key global events.
• Explore the history of islands, including their cultural and historical significance.
• Investigate significant aspects of world history, such as ancient civilisations, empires, and non-European societies.
• Understand key historical concepts including continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity and difference, and significance.
• Learn how historians work—through historical enquiry, using evidence to make informed interpretations.
• Gain historical perspective by making connections across time periods, cultures, and themes.

What should we see all children doing?

• Asking thoughtful questions and engaging in discussions about the past.
• Using historical vocabulary confidently and accurately.
• Making links between different historical periods and themes.
• Evaluating sources and evidence to draw conclusions.
• Presenting their learning through writing, drama, art, and debate.
