Promoting British Values and the Prevent Duty

Our school is a place that inspires, includes and engages young minds. We are committed to promoting the core British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. These values shape our culture, our curriculum and the way we treat one another every day.

We believe every individual has a voice that deserves to be heard and respected. Through discussion, debate and learning alongside others, pupils develop the confidence to express their views, listen to different perspectives and understand the importance of living in a diverse and respectful society.

 

Our Approach to the Prevent Duty

As part of our safeguarding responsibilities, we follow the national Prevent Strategy, which aims to protect children from the risks of radicalisation and extremism. In school, this means:

  • Creating a safe, inclusive environment where pupils feel a strong sense of belonging
  • Teaching children how to think critically, challenge ideas safely and recognise risks
  • Encouraging respectful discussion and understanding of different viewpoints
  • Ensuring staff are trained to identify concerns and know how to respond
  • Working closely with families and external partners when needed

Prevent is not about discouraging beliefs or limiting discussion. It is about safeguarding children from harm and helping them develop the knowledge and resilience to make safe, informed choices.

 

How We Teach and Promote These Values

Through our curriculum, assemblies, PSHE/RSE lessons and wider school life, pupils learn about:

  • Respecting others, even when they disagree
  • Understanding right and wrong
  • Making safe and responsible choices
  • Celebrating diversity and different cultures
  • Recognising and reporting concerns
  • Staying safe online and offline

These themes are woven throughout school life so that children grow into confident, thoughtful and responsible young citizens.
