Supporting Families Through One of the Biggest Leaps in a Child’s School Journey

At Ash Green, we understand that the transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to Key Stage 1 is one of the most significant—and often daunting—milestones in a child’s educational journey. It’s a time of great change, not only for children but for parents too. That’s why we’ve developed our bespoke ‘Beyond the Early Years Transition Programme’, carefully tailored to meet the unique needs of our children, families, and wider community.

This programme is designed to bridge the gap between the play-based learning of the Early Years and the more structured environment of Key Stage 1. Through five thoughtfully crafted sessions, we aim to provide both children and parents with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to navigate this transition smoothly and positively.

The Five Key Sessions:

  1. From Play to Structured Learning
Exploring how learning evolves and how we maintain joy and curiosity in a more formal setting.
  2. Supporting Independence and Building New Routines
Practical strategies to help children grow in confidence and adapt to new expectations.
  3. An Introduction to the Key Stage 1 Curriculum
A clear and accessible overview of what learning looks like in Year 1.
  4. Understanding the Importance of Phonics in Reading
Why phonics matters and how you can support your child’s reading journey at home.
  5. Social and Emotional Readiness
Helping children feel secure, resilient, and ready to thrive in their new environment.

Our programme is thoughtfully structured to begin in the Summer Term, continue with supportive resources and activities over the Summer Break, and extend into the Autumn Term of the new academic year—ensuring continuity and reassurance every step of the way.

We hope that families find these sessions useful, reassuring, and reflective, helping to prepare children for the exciting new chapter ahead. At Ash Green, we’re committed to walking alongside you and your child as you take this important leap—together.

Over the coming weeks, communication will be shared to launch each individual session.
